Pour ma part, j&#39;aime beaucoup <\/em><em><strong>Cocoon, In Country et The Spitfire Grill<\/strong><\/em><em>.<\/em>&nbsp;&raquo;<sup>1<\/sup> James Horner (1998).<\/span>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/images\/albums\/incountry.jpg\" style=\"width: 250px; height: 250px; float: left; border-width: 2px; border-style: solid; margin: 10px;\" \/>Nous ne remercierons jamais assez Douglass Fake et Roger Feigelson d&#39;avoir enfin &eacute;dit&eacute; cette partition tant aim&eacute;e du compositeur et qui depuis 1989 manquait cruellement &agrave; nos discoth&egrave;ques. Depuis deux d&eacute;cennies, nous vivions avec la certitude que la brillante musique du film de Norman Jewison m&eacute;ritait une &eacute;dition discographique digne de son nom. Les deux artisans d&#39;Intrada mettent donc un terme salvateur &agrave; une bien longue attente et r&eacute;chauffent par la m&ecirc;me occasion nos c&oelig;urs frigorifi&eacute;s par l&#39;hiver.<\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Sorti en France sous le titre <strong>Un h&eacute;ros comme tant d&#39;autres, In Country<\/strong> narre les difficult&eacute;s d&#39;un v&eacute;t&eacute;ran du Vietnam (Bruce Willis) &agrave; s&rsquo;occuper de la fille de son fr&egrave;re mort au combat. Sur une th&eacute;matique similaire &agrave; celle d&#39;un autre film sorti la m&ecirc;me ann&eacute;e, <strong>N&eacute; un 4 juillet<\/strong> (Oliver Stone) ou encore de <strong>The War At Home<\/strong> (Emilio Esteves, 1996), Norman Jewison tisse une nouvelle version sur le th&egrave;me du retour &agrave; la vie. Ce dernier long-m&eacute;trage partage d&#39;ailleurs avec <strong>In Country<\/strong> un autre point commun&nbsp;: tout comme James Horner, le compositeur Basil Poledouris avait mis&eacute; sur une musique intime et m&eacute;lodique pour accompagner l&rsquo;itin&eacute;raire des personnages tourment&eacute;s par la guerre. Connu pour changer r&eacute;guli&egrave;rement de compositeur, le r&eacute;alisateur Norman Jewison fait alors le choix de celui qui, au cr&eacute;puscule des ann&eacute;es quatre-vingt, avait d&eacute;j&agrave; imprim&eacute; la musique de films de sa vision.<\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Ce versant essentiel de son &oelig;uvre s&rsquo;&eacute;panouit ici &agrave; merveille. En effet, si nous excluons son introduction et son final interpr&eacute;t&eacute;s par un grand orchestre, et encore avec une retenue certaine dans son lyrisme, une pudeur salutaire devant le souvenir et la mort, <strong>In Country<\/strong> se recentre pour le reste sur un petit ensemble d&#39;instruments. Les sessions d&#39;enregistrements se d&eacute;roul&egrave;rent d&rsquo;ailleurs en deux temps&nbsp;: fin mars 89 aux CBS Radford Studios et mi-avril avec le grand orchestre au Burbank Studios. A l&rsquo;image des partitions compos&eacute;es la m&ecirc;me ann&eacute;e pour <strong>Mon p&egrave;re <\/strong>(<strong>Dad<\/strong>) et <strong>Jusqu&#39;au bout du r&ecirc;ve <\/strong>(<strong>Field of Dreams<\/strong>), James Horner s&rsquo;efface devant le sujet pour mieux le transcender, ceci en respectant l&rsquo;aspect cyclique de son travail. Chaque partition est unique et s&rsquo;inscrit &agrave; la fois dans un sch&eacute;ma cr&eacute;atif global.<\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\"><strong>In Beauty<\/strong><\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/images\/articles\/INCOUNTRY\/incountry1.jpg\" style=\"width: 350px; height: 240px; float: left; border-width: 2px; border-style: solid; margin: 10px;\" \/>Le premier contact avec <strong>In Country<\/strong> ne laisse pas indiff&eacute;rent. Un premier regard qui subjugue et qu&#39;il est difficile d&#39;oublier. Le constat est simple&nbsp;: cette musique est belle. Qu&#39;est ce qui lui vaut cet adjectif&nbsp;? La r&eacute;ponse se trouve dans les subtiles orchestrations de James Horner et de Greig McRitchie, &agrave; un enregistrement qui a su capter toutes les nuances de celles-ci. Ces qualit&eacute;s redonnent une place plus digne &agrave; cette partition dans la discographie du compositeur, comme si son absence nous avait amen&eacute; &agrave; la n&eacute;gliger quelque peu. Rien ne remplacera, d&eacute;cid&eacute;ment, l&rsquo;envergure d&rsquo;une &eacute;dition discographique pour r&eacute;ellement mettre en valeur une musique de film, dans la mesure o&ugrave; elle sait se pr&eacute;server une seconde vie hors de l&rsquo;&eacute;cran.<\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Une trompette, un zeste de percussions puis un subtil arp&egrave;ge de harpe qui annonce l&#39;entr&eacute;e des cordes&#8230; L&rsquo;ouverture de l&#39;album r&eacute;sume toute l&#39;&eacute;l&eacute;gance qui &eacute;mane des orchestrations et les soins apport&eacute;s &agrave; la prise du son. James Horner a &eacute;crit pour <strong>In Country<\/strong> une musique pudique &agrave; l&#39;image du jeu des bois (bassons &agrave; 2&rsquo;29, clarinette et hautbois &agrave; 2&rsquo;44) dans <em>Faraway Thoughts<\/em>. Nous comprenons mieux pourquoi le compositeur appr&eacute;cie cette partition, car &agrave; l&rsquo;instar de <strong>Cocoon<\/strong>, de <strong>The Spitfire Grill<\/strong> ou de <strong>Iris<\/strong>, elle propose une forme musicale tout en subtilit&eacute;, propice &agrave; l&rsquo;&eacute;mergence de l&#39;&eacute;motion chez l&#39;auditeur. Une musique qui lui ressemble, tout simplement.<\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\"><strong>In the past, in the future<\/strong><\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\"><strong>In Country<\/strong> est une pierre angulaire dans la carri&egrave;re de James Horner. Elle condense une partie des partitions cr&eacute;&eacute;es dans les ann&eacute;es quatre-vingt et annonce des couleurs que nous retrouverons diss&eacute;min&eacute;es par petites touches dans de nombreuses musiques ult&eacute;rieures. <\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Le th&egrave;me qui introduit l&#39;album (<em>Distant Memories) <\/em>avec ses cordes accompagn&eacute;es des percussions ch&egrave;res au compositeur (<strong>Uncommon Valor<\/strong>, 1983, <strong>Aliens<\/strong>, 1986) cr&eacute;e un pont entre les marches de <strong>Glory<\/strong> (1989) et les hymnes &eacute;l&eacute;giaques de <strong>Courage Under Fire<\/strong> (A l&#39;&eacute;preuve du feu, 1996). Les soli de trompette renvoient quant &agrave; eux au cor de <strong>Testament<\/strong> (1983) et au patriotisme d&#39;<strong>Apollo 13<\/strong> (1995). In Country synth&eacute;tise ainsi toute la dimension <em>guerri&egrave;re<\/em> de la musique du maestro, laquelle se d&eacute;marque pr&eacute;cis&eacute;ment par son approche non-guerri&egrave;re.<\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/images\/articles\/INCOUNTRY\/incountry4.jpg\" style=\"width: 350px; height: 231px; border-width: 2px; border-style: solid; float: right; margin: 10px;\" \/>Le second th&egrave;me, plus lyrique, transpire l&#39;&eacute;motion et sera exploit&eacute; dans <strong>Legends Of The Fall<\/strong> (L&eacute;gendes d&#39;automne, 1994) et <strong>The Four Feathers<\/strong> (Fr&egrave;res du d&eacute;sert, 2002), mais puisque sa m&eacute;lodie repose sur une tournure celtique, il sera surtout d&eacute;velopp&eacute; dans <strong>The Devil&rsquo;s Own <\/strong>(Ennemis rapproch&eacute;s, 1996). Il apporte ce c&ocirc;t&eacute; romanesque et humain qui ne se limite pas &agrave; illustrer les images et l&#39;histoire, mais en occupe une partie active. Il soutient le film et les sentiments des personnages avec force et d&eacute;licatesse. <\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Dans <em>Faraway Thoughts<\/em> et <em>Three Generations<\/em>, le piano nous replonge de mani&egrave;re nostalgique dans les souvenirs scell&eacute;s par les &eacute;coutes de <strong>To Gillian<\/strong> (Par amour pour Gillian, 1996) et de <strong>Field Of Dreams<\/strong> (Jusqu&#39;au bout du r&ecirc;ve, 1989). La guitare de Tommy Todesco d&eacute;j&agrave; pr&eacute;sente dans ce dernier album confirme notre impression tout en red&eacute;ployant des sensations connues &agrave; travers <strong>Cocoon<\/strong> (1985) et <strong>The<\/strong> <strong>Journey Of Natty Gann<\/strong> (Natty Gann, 1985), berceaux de l&#39;&eacute;motion hornerienne. Le caract&egrave;re paisible de la partition s&#39;installe d&#39;autant plus durablement que <em>The Letter Home<\/em> s&#39;ouvre sur les douces cordes qui formeront la matrice romantique de <strong>Bicentennial Man<\/strong> (L&#39;homme bicentenaire, 1999).<\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Puis vient la parenth&egrave;se &eacute;lectronique et angoissante du sixi&egrave;me morceau (<em>In Country<\/em>). Elle forme une base, une approche que James Horner utilisera au cours des deux d&eacute;cennies suivantes. Nous y trouvons les origines synth&eacute;tiques des morceaux <em>Revenge<\/em> (<strong>Legends Of The Fall<\/strong>,<strong> Braveheart<\/strong>), les pulsations qui accompagneront les p&eacute;rip&eacute;ties d&#39;Harisson Ford (<strong>Patriot Games<\/strong>, <strong>Devil&#39;s Own<\/strong>), l&#39;exotisme mena&ccedil;ant d&#39;<strong>Apocalypto<\/strong> et d&#39;<strong>Avatar<\/strong> et bien s&ucirc;r la furie douloureuse du shakuhachi de Kazu Matsui, qui explosera &agrave; travers le th&egrave;me de Tristan (<strong>Legends Of the Fall<\/strong>). Dans le morceau suivant (<em>Emmett<\/em>), les angoisses et les blessures s&rsquo;att&eacute;nuent gr&acirc;ce &agrave; la douceur apaisante des bois et de la guitare qui jouent les premi&egrave;res notes de <strong>Swing Kids<\/strong> (1993) ou de <strong>The Boy In The Striped Pajamas<\/strong> (Le gar&ccedil;on au pyjama ray&eacute;, 2007), &eacute;vocations de la guerre sous sa forme la plus innocente.<\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/images\/articles\/INCOUNTRY\/incountry6.jpg\" style=\"width: 350px; height: 231px; border-width: 2px; border-style: solid; float: left; margin: 10px;\" \/>Quant au morceau d&rsquo;anthologie qui conclue la partition (<em>Fallen Friends<\/em>), il brille de mille feux et rassemble en une unique pi&egrave;ce de presque onze minutes toutes les composantes cit&eacute;es pr&eacute;c&eacute;demment. C&#39;est le joyau m&eacute;lodique et orchestral de l&#39;album, tout en couleurs pastels qui nous impr&egrave;gnent tendrement et nous bouleversent assur&eacute;ment. Il perp&eacute;tue l&rsquo;habitude de plus en plus fr&eacute;quente &agrave; l&#39;&eacute;poque et encore aujourd&#39;hui chez James Horner, de mettre en musique les &eacute;pilogues &agrave; travers des longues plages, &agrave; l&#39;image des conclusions de <strong>Legends Of The Fall<\/strong>,<strong> Braveheart<\/strong>,<strong> Courage Under Fire <\/strong>ou encore<strong> The Pelican Brief<\/strong>&hellip;<\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Les morceaux additionnels proposent des variations int&eacute;ressantes et bienvenues qui d&eacute;montrent combien le compositeur sait sculpter ses m&eacute;lodies en fonction du contexte des sc&egrave;nes, aussi courtes soient elles, mais elles renforcent toutefois l&rsquo;impression de r&eacute;p&eacute;titivit&eacute; de la musique dans son ensemble.<\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\"><strong>In fine<\/strong><\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<p align=\"JUSTIFY\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\">L&#39;addition de tous ces aspects fait de <strong>In Country<\/strong> une partition &agrave; la fois h&eacute;riti&egrave;re et nourrici&egrave;re. Elle illustre la maturit&eacute; stylistique du compositeur construite au cours de la premi&egrave;re partie de sa carri&egrave;re et qui transpara&icirc;t &eacute;galement dans les joyaux symphoniques de la m&ecirc;me &eacute;poque, tels <strong>The Land Before Time<\/strong> ou <strong>Willow<\/strong>. Elle repr&eacute;sente par l&agrave;-m&ecirc;me une somme de dix ann&eacute;es d&#39;exp&eacute;rience au service de l&#39;image, une d&eacute;monstration de l&#39;&eacute;volution des orchestrations par rapport au style d&eacute;velopp&eacute; lors des ann&eacute;es quatre-vingt, mais aussi une projection vers l&#39;avenir car cet album nous emm&egrave;ne directement dans ce que sera la musique du compositeur au milieu des ann&eacute;es quatre-vingt-dix. Red&eacute;couvrir une telle musique vingt-quatre ans apr&egrave;s sa cr&eacute;ation est un cadeau, une malle au tr&eacute;sor dont l&#39;exploration de chaque recoin constitue un plaisir, une culture de l&#39;esprit. <strong>In Country<\/strong> ou le cha&icirc;non manquant et indispensable de l&#39;&eacute;motion <em>by<\/em> James Horner.<\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p
