Comme ce fut le cas pour la partition de <a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/com\/?page_id=25741\"><strong>Living In the Age of Airplanes<\/strong><\/a> sortie il y a deux semaines &eacute;galement chez Intrada, ce nouveau CD reprend l&rsquo;exact programme, c&rsquo;est-&agrave;-dire l&rsquo;album con&ccedil;u par James Horner, d&eacute;j&agrave; disponible en t&eacute;l&eacute;chargement en 2008 (un CD-R promotionnel fut aussi produit &agrave; l&rsquo;&eacute;poque en vue d&rsquo;une nomination aux Oscars).<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px\">Fond&eacute; sur le roman pour la jeunesse de l&rsquo;&eacute;crivain irlandais John Boyne, <a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/com\/?page_id=987\"><strong>Le Gar&ccedil;on Au Pyjama Ray&eacute;<\/strong><\/a> relate le d&eacute;m&eacute;nagement pour la Pologne d&rsquo;une famille berlinoise ais&eacute;e pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, o&ugrave; le p&egrave;re, officier nazi, se r&eacute;v&egrave;le &ecirc;tre le commandant du camp de concentration et d&rsquo;extermination d&rsquo;Auschwitz&hellip; La force du film repose sur le regard du personnage principal, Bruno, le benjamin de la famille &acirc;g&eacute; de 8 ans, et sur la musique sobre et d&eacute;licate de James Horner. Tandis que la famille se d&eacute;chire, notamment autour du sort d&rsquo;un m&eacute;decin juif devenu l&rsquo;esclave du foyer puis sur le camp lui-m&ecirc;me, Bruno se lie d&rsquo;amiti&eacute; avec Shmuel, un jeune gar&ccedil;on juif de son &acirc;ge (le fameux gar&ccedil;on au pyjama ray&eacute; du titre) prisonnier d&rsquo;Auschwitz. Les deux gar&ccedil;ons d&eacute;passent leurs conditions oppos&eacute;es, comme seuls des enfants savent le faire, et se lient d&rsquo;amiti&eacute; en d&eacute;pit de la cl&ocirc;ture barbel&eacute;e qui les s&eacute;pare. Bruno, d&rsquo;abord insouciant car ignorant le contexte dans lequel il est plong&eacute;, prend peu &agrave; peu conscience de la situation &eacute;pouvantable dont souffre son ami, sans jamais comprendre toute l&rsquo;horreur de la situation&#8230; jusqu&rsquo;&agrave; l&rsquo;effroyable sc&egrave;ne finale.<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"imgcollabo\" src=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/The_Boy_in_the_Striped_Pajamas5.jpg\" \/>\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px\">Lorsque James Horner est annonc&eacute; comme compositeur sur <a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/com\/?page_id=987\"><strong>Le Gar&ccedil;on Au Pyjama Ray&eacute;<\/strong><\/a>, chacun peut s&rsquo;imaginer que le compositeur tient l&agrave; l&rsquo;occasion de composer une partition noble et &eacute;mouvante. James Horner, s&rsquo;il s&rsquo;inscrit assez logiquement dans la lign&eacute;e de sa partition pour <a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/com\/?page_id=720\"><strong>Swing Kids<\/strong><\/a>, pr&eacute;f&egrave;re plut&ocirc;t que de traiter du contexte, se concentrer comme &agrave; l&rsquo;accoutum&eacute;e sur son personnage. James Horner <em>devient<\/em> Bruno et, pour le th&egrave;me principal du film, &eacute;voque merveilleusement l&rsquo;enfance et la passion du jeune gar&ccedil;on pour les avions qu&rsquo;il imite avec ses camarades &agrave; la sortie de l&rsquo;&eacute;cole en &eacute;cartant les bras, notamment dans la sc&egrave;ne qui ouvre le film. Apr&egrave;s une introduction de quelques mesures jou&eacute;es aux synth&eacute;tiseurs qui installent une tension sourde, <em>Boys Playing Airplanes<\/em> expose le th&egrave;me principal, superbe, o&ugrave; le piano interpr&eacute;t&eacute; par le compositeur lui-m&ecirc;me, et les cordes tiennent la part belle, soutenus par la clarinette (au moment o&ugrave; le ghetto juif est montr&eacute;). Ce th&egrave;me illustre &agrave; merveille le point de vue enfantin de Bruno sur son monde.<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px\">Une fois la famille install&eacute;e en Pologne, Bruno parvient &agrave; p&eacute;n&eacute;trer dans les bois jouxtant la maison, d&eacute;sob&eacute;issant &agrave; l&rsquo;interdiction formelle des parents. Comme n&rsquo;importe quel enfant, il joue avec des b&acirc;tons et marche sous le soleil. James Horner en profite pour jouer avec le kal&eacute;idoscope de lumi&egrave;res que la canop&eacute;e des arbres laisse passer sur Bruno dans <em>Exploring the Forest<\/em>. A ce moment, le morceau n&rsquo;est pas sans rappeler d&rsquo;autres partitions de Horner, comme <a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/com\/?page_id=882\"><strong>Un Homme d&rsquo;exception<\/strong><\/a> (A Beautiful Mind), partition pens&eacute;e pour justement reproduire musicalement l&rsquo;effet de l&rsquo;instrument optique r&eacute;fl&eacute;chissant &agrave; l&#039;infini et en couleurs la lumi&egrave;re ext&eacute;rieure. Il s&rsquo;ach&egrave;ve doucement, avec la d&eacute;couverte du camp et de ces &laquo;&nbsp;fermiers&nbsp;&raquo;, comme les appelle Bruno, dans leur dr&ocirc;le de costume.<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px\">Le troisi&egrave;me morceau de l&rsquo;album, <em>The Train Ride to a New Home<\/em>, accompagne une sc&egrave;ne ant&eacute;rieure &agrave; <em>Exploring the Forest<\/em>, celle de l&rsquo;arriv&eacute;e de la famille en Pologne par le chemin de fer. Apr&egrave;s les synth&eacute;tiseurs dissonants, c&rsquo;est l&rsquo;occasion de citer &agrave; nouveau le th&egrave;me principal au piano (d&rsquo;o&ugrave; le choix probable d&rsquo;Horner d&rsquo;inverser les pistes 2 et 3 par rapport au film).<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px\">Dans <em>The Winds Gently Blow Through the Garden<\/em>, Horner d&eacute;ploie un mat&eacute;riau dramatique, qui illustre l&rsquo;horreur rampante dont prennent peu &agrave; peu conscience Bruno et sa m&egrave;re. Largement construit pour le piano soutenu par les cordes, le morceau s&rsquo;&eacute;tend sur presque six minutes o&ugrave; le pathos ne verse jamais dans le lacrymal.<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px\">Pour <em>An Odd Discovery Beyond the Trees<\/em>, tandis que le film montre le camp vu de la maison, Horner convoque une voix f&eacute;minine, et ce son synth&eacute;tique qui &eacute;voque le vent (ou est-ce le souffle&nbsp;?) qu&rsquo;il a si souvent utilis&eacute;, en plus du piano.<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px\">La s&oelig;ur de Bruno, plus &acirc;g&eacute;e, tombe amoureuse d&rsquo;un jeune officier nazi au service de son p&egrave;re. Elle se d&eacute;barrasse de ses poup&eacute;es de petite fille pour tapisser sa chambre de posters de propagande &agrave; la gloire du Reich. Bruno, qui explore la cave, tombe sur l&rsquo;empilement de ces poup&eacute;es, d&eacute;shabill&eacute;es et jet&eacute;es l&agrave;, dans un amalgame de plastique couleur chair qui fait &eacute;cho &agrave; l&rsquo;empilement des corps gaz&eacute;s d&rsquo;Auschwitz que le film ne montre pas, mais qui renvoient aux photographies ou aux films insoutenables qui nous sont parvenus apr&egrave;s la guerre. Pour illustrer cette sc&egrave;ne, <em>Dolls Aren&rsquo;t for Big Girls, Propaganda is&hellip;<\/em>, Horner rappelle la voix f&eacute;minine du morceau pr&eacute;c&eacute;dent, mais s&rsquo;appuie davantage sur les cordes que sur le piano, provoquant un sentiment de malaise de plus en plus profond. L&rsquo;in&eacute;luctable est en marche.<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"imgcollabo\" src=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/The_Boy_in_the_Striped_Pajamas6.jpg\" \/>\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px\">Avec <em>Black Smoke<\/em>, Horner joue avec son th&egrave;me principal en le superposant &agrave; une nappe synth&eacute;tique dissonante et &agrave; une seconde m&eacute;lodie au piano plus inqui&eacute;tante, accompagn&eacute;e par la voix f&eacute;minine. Pendant cette sc&egrave;ne, la m&egrave;re de Bruno r&eacute;alise que l&rsquo;odeur &eacute;pouvantable de la fum&eacute;e noire qui s&rsquo;&eacute;chappe des chemin&eacute;es d&rsquo;Auschwitz provient de la cr&eacute;mation des corps.<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px\">A ce stade du film, le p&egrave;re qui a tenu &agrave; garder un semblant de normalit&eacute; de sa vie de famille, expose son vrai visage, lorsqu&rsquo;il d&eacute;cide d&rsquo;envoyer son aide de camp sur le front russe, ou lorsque des dignitaires nazis viennent contr&ocirc;ler son travail, lui intimant l&rsquo;ordre d&rsquo;augmenter la capacit&eacute; du camp &agrave; exterminer les Juifs. Le morceau <em>Evening Supper \/ A Family Slowly Crumbles<\/em> s&rsquo;&eacute;tend sur pr&egrave;s de huit minutes, longue plage sonnant d&rsquo;abord comme un adagio pour cordes, puis le piano reprend seul le th&egrave;me principal, dans une version lente, avant le retour des cordes et de la voix soliste.<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px\">Lorsque la grand-m&egrave;re paternelle de Bruno, oppos&eacute;e aux id&eacute;aux de son fils nazi, meurt, la famille retourne &agrave; Berlin pour les fun&eacute;railles. <em>The Funeral<\/em> s&rsquo;ouvre &agrave; propos sur le motif &agrave; quatre notes, &agrave; la trompette, tandis que la m&egrave;re et le p&egrave;re de Bruno se d&eacute;chirent au cimeti&egrave;re, sur fond de cordes. Le F&uuml;hrer a fait d&eacute;poser sur le cercueil une note manuscrite: la m&egrave;re s&rsquo;indigne de ce geste que la grand-m&egrave;re aurait d&eacute;test&eacute;. Le mari explique &agrave; sa femme le danger qu&rsquo;ils encourent eux-m&ecirc;mes s&rsquo;ils venaient &agrave; d&eacute;fier l&rsquo;hommage, et sur cette situation mortif&egrave;re, Horner conclue la sc&egrave;ne avec une autre citation des fameuses quatre notes.<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"imgcollabo\" src=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/The_Boy_in_the_Striped_Pajamas4.jpg\" \/>\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px\"><em>The Boys&rsquo; Plans, From Night to Day<\/em> illustre la strat&eacute;gie de Bruno et Shmuel pour se rejoindre, car le p&egrave;re de Shmuel a disparu dans le camp et Bruno veut aider son ami &agrave; le rechercher. Bruno a l&rsquo;id&eacute;e de demander &agrave; Shmuel de lui pr&eacute;parer un pyjama ray&eacute; pour pouvoir &eacute;voluer dans le camp sans se faire rep&eacute;rer. L&rsquo;espoir que ce plan r&eacute;ussisse ne fait pas de doute pour les deux enfants, et Horner restitue parfaitement cet espoir avec ce morceau lumineux, presque joyeux. C&rsquo;est que Bruno a auparavant pu visionner en cachette les films de propagande de son p&egrave;re qui vantent la vie dans les camps. Sauf que le gar&ccedil;on les a pris au premier degr&eacute;, persuad&eacute; &agrave; tort qu&rsquo;il s&rsquo;agit d&rsquo;une sorte de camp de vacances&hellip;<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px\">Alors que les dix pistes qui pr&eacute;c&egrave;dent ont aid&eacute; &agrave; construire un climat de tension avec certes quelques phases plus lumineuses, les deux derni&egrave;res pistes sont bouleversantes, d&rsquo;une gravit&eacute; restitu&eacute;e sobrement mais implacablement. <em>Strange New Clothes<\/em> nous entra&icirc;ne vers l&rsquo;indicible pendant dix minutes. Cordes, bois et piano jouent avec le th&egrave;me principal tandis que les deux gar&ccedil;ons progressent dans le camp. Bruno, qui reconna&icirc;t des baraquements qu&rsquo;il a vus dans les films de propagande, ralentit parfois, r&eacute;alisant le d&eacute;calage entre la fiction enjou&eacute;e et la sordide r&eacute;alit&eacute;. La musique se suspend alors. Quand les deux gar&ccedil;ons rencontrent les premiers prisonniers, le choc de Bruno est immense. Ces adultes sont d&eacute;charn&eacute;s, quasi immobiles car &eacute;puis&eacute;s. Rien &agrave; voir avec les parties joyeuses de football vant&eacute;es sur pellicule. Parall&egrave;lement, la m&egrave;re de Bruno d&eacute;couvre son absence et comprend &agrave; travers une fen&ecirc;tre ouverte que Bruno est parti en direction du camp. Elle pr&eacute;vient son mari et avec la s&oelig;ur, ils partent &agrave; la recherche de Bruno. Mais Shmuel et Bruno se retrouvent pris au milieu de prisonniers qui sont subitement emmen&eacute;s. Shmuel et Bruno, entour&eacute;s de ces adultes terroris&eacute;s, se d&eacute;placent dans le camp escort&eacute;s par les soldats et entrent dans un autre b&acirc;timent et tout le monde doit se d&eacute;shabiller. Certains pleurent, d&rsquo;autres expliquent que ce n&rsquo;est rien. Apr&egrave;s que les parents de Bruno ont retrouv&eacute; les v&ecirc;tements de leur fils &agrave; la lisi&egrave;re du camp, le p&egrave;re comprend ce qui se joue et se pr&eacute;cipite avec ses hommes. Les deux gar&ccedil;ons se tiennent la main tandis que la lumi&egrave;re s&rsquo;&eacute;teint. Bruno l&egrave;ve les yeux vers une ouverture, le gaz mortel y est introduit et les cordes d&eacute;chirantes de James Horner hurlent, litt&eacute;ralement, une derni&egrave;re fois tandis que des coups sont donn&eacute;s contre la porte depuis l&rsquo;int&eacute;rieur de la chambre &agrave; gaz, puis se taisent. Ce long morceau, d&rsquo;abord subtil puis d&rsquo;une intensit&eacute; insoutenable, compte parmi les plus intenses que le compositeur ait &eacute;crits.<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"imgcollabo\" src=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/The_Boy_in_the_Striped_Pajamas2.jpg\" \/>\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t&nbsp;\n\t<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px\">Le film s&rsquo;ach&egrave;ve sur les portes closes de la chambre &agrave; gaz tandis que d&eacute;bute <em>Remembrance, Remembrance<\/em>, qui couvre le g&eacute;n&eacute;rique de fin. Cette ultime piste expose, apr&egrave;s une br&egrave;ve reprise des cordes, le plus long d&eacute;veloppement du th&egrave;me principal, comme une r&eacute;miniscence du regard de Bruno.
