Pour s&rsquo;adonner &agrave; sa passion des techniques visuelles et d&eacute;buter par la m&ecirc;me occasion dans la mise en sc&egrave;ne, le sp&eacute;cialiste des effets sp&eacute;ciaux <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=5133\">Joe Johnston<\/a> se voit offrir un &eacute;crin id&eacute;al&nbsp;: celui de la rencontre de la com&eacute;die familiale et de la science fiction des ann&eacute;es 50.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Comment approcher ce sujet pour le compositeur am&eacute;ricain&nbsp;? Par une forme particuli&egrave;re de l&rsquo;incongru et du fantasque, un cirque musical, au bon sens du terme. Ce premier film avec <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=5133\">Joe Johnston<\/a> est aussi un premier chapitre &agrave; la folie que sera plus tard <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=754\"><strong>Jumanji<\/strong><\/a>. Entre temps, James Horner aura mis en musique le r&ecirc;ve <\/span><\/span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/images\/albums\/honeytitre.jpg\" style=\"width: 300px; height: 192px; float: left; margin: 10px;\" \/><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">d&rsquo;Icare sous l&rsquo;angle de la bande dessin&eacute;e et du comics avec <strong><a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=650\">Rocketeer<\/a><\/strong>, et le sens du merveilleux que l&rsquo;enfant d&eacute;couvre &agrave; la lecture des classiques dans <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=742\"><strong>The Pagemaster<\/strong><\/a> (Richard au Pays des Livres Magiques). Le sens des m&eacute;langes musicaux de <span class=\"st_tag internal_tag\">James Horner<\/span>, qui para&icirc;t souvent incongru chez beaucoup d&rsquo;esprits cart&eacute;siens, n&rsquo;est donc rien d&rsquo;autre que la fid&eacute;lit&eacute; qu&rsquo;entretient le compositeur avec une tradition musicale, celle que par exemple Chostakovitch a pratiqu&eacute;e, celle de la fantaisie et de l&rsquo;humour, dont le compositeur russe faisait preuve dans certaines de ses symphonies ou partitions pour le cin&eacute;ma.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Les fameuses couleurs, obsession de James Horner&hellip;&nbsp;<em>Main Title<\/em> en expose d&eacute;j&agrave; deux. La premi&egrave;re juste pour donner le ton et la seconde de fa&ccedil;on grandiose&nbsp;: couleur &laquo;&nbsp;fellinienne&nbsp;&raquo;&nbsp;tout d&rsquo;abord, celle qui a pos&eacute; le plus d&eacute;bat par l&rsquo;utilisation, l&rsquo;appropriation d&rsquo;une phrase du th&egrave;me d&rsquo;<strong>Amarcord <\/strong>de Nino Rota, ici mise en musique dans un contexte totalement d&eacute;glingu&eacute;, associ&eacute;e au savant fou jou&eacute; par Rick Moranis (rendons donc &agrave; C&eacute;sar sa phrase de saxo). Cette couleur permet &agrave; James Horner de se l&acirc;cher dans l&rsquo;instrumentation&nbsp;: saxophone, harmonica, percussions, etc. C&rsquo;est la partie la plus &eacute;loign&eacute;e de l&rsquo;&eacute;criture symphonique traditionnelle. Couleur cartoonesque ensuite, rendant hommage &agrave; la mise en musique des dessins anim&eacute;s d&eacute;lirants de la Warner, par l&rsquo;utilisation de la &laquo;&nbsp;middle part&nbsp;&raquo; du fameux Powerhouse de Raymond Scott (dont le r&eacute;pertoire avait &eacute;t&eacute; abondamment exploit&eacute; dans les Looney Tunes). C&rsquo;est s&ucirc;rement la partie la plus proche du big band, celle qui &eacute;voque les tentatives pr&eacute;c&eacute;dentes du compositeur d&rsquo;incorporer des styles musicaux dont il n&rsquo;&eacute;tait pas vraiment familier de par sa formation tr&egrave;s classique, comme ce fut le cas avec <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=548\"><strong>Batteries Not Included<\/strong><\/a> (Miracle Sur La 8<sup>&egrave;me<\/sup> Rue).<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Enfin, plus proche de sa sensibilit&eacute;, l&rsquo;&eacute;criture symphonique port&eacute;e par le superbe <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=5630\">London Symphony Orchestra<\/a>, et qu&rsquo;on devine impr&eacute;gn&eacute;e tout du long de musique russe (et cela s&rsquo;entend de fa&ccedil;on tr&egrave;s explicite dans des passages bien pr&eacute;cis). En contrepoint, et c&rsquo;est ce qui rend James Horner int&eacute;ressant &agrave; cette p&eacute;riode, le d&eacute;sir de confronter les musiciens virtuoses du LSO et sa propre approche symphonique avec d&rsquo;autres virtuoses, les membres de l&rsquo;excellent ensemble Incantation, qu&#39;Ennio Morricone a rendu c&eacute;l&egrave;bre dans <strong>The Mission<\/strong> (Mission), et que James Horner a &eacute;galement confront&eacute;s &agrave; la m&ecirc;me p&eacute;riode &agrave; la masse orchestrale et chorale dans <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=616\"><strong>Willow<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Si cette partition manque en apparence de coh&eacute;sion musicale, contrairement &agrave; la fluidit&eacute; et &agrave; la lin&eacute;arit&eacute; d&rsquo;autres compositions de la m&ecirc;me &eacute;poque comme <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=622\"><strong>The Land Before Time<\/strong><\/a> (Le Petit Dinosaure Et La Vall&eacute;e Des Merveilles), l&rsquo;effet produit correspond bien &agrave; l&rsquo;esprit virevoltant du cartoon, bien mis en avant dans le prologue anim&eacute; du film par une pi&egrave;ce de big band orchestral construite sur le passage de Raymond Scott, et l&rsquo;id&eacute;e centrale du film&nbsp;: l&rsquo;absence de rep&egrave;res pour les enfants de la famille Zalinsky, r&eacute;duits &agrave; la taille d&rsquo;insectes, totalement d&eacute;rout&eacute;s par leur nouvel environnement, qui n&rsquo;est plus familier mais totalement hostile. Des poissons hors de l&rsquo;eau, et loin du bocal&nbsp;!<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">L&rsquo;&eacute;criture orchestrale de <span class=\"st_tag internal_tag\">James Horner<\/span> est le prolongement de celle qu&rsquo;il a mise sur papier au d&eacute;but des ann&eacute;es 80, que ce soit dans <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=445\"><strong>Star Trek II<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=514\"><strong>Krull<\/strong><\/a> ou <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=447\"><strong>Brainstorm<\/strong><\/a>, celle qui puise dans l&rsquo;art de ses compositeurs pr&eacute;f&eacute;r&eacute;s&nbsp;: Prokofiev, Chostakovitch et Britten mais aussi Ligeti pour l&rsquo;&eacute;laboration de ses dissonances les plus sophistiqu&eacute;es. Au-del&agrave; des r&eacute;f&eacute;rences et des nombreuses paternit&eacute;s, la musique de James Horner existe surtout par un style tr&egrave;s personnel, reconnaissable en quelques mesures, une musique tr&egrave;s pr&eacute;sente, expressive, lyrique, &agrave; l&rsquo;instrumentation claire. Marches militaires, cuivres lugubres, dissonances et clusters orchestraux, virtuosit&eacute;, th&egrave;mes tendres, elle accompagne les p&eacute;r&eacute;grinations, commente les &eacute;v&eacute;nements fantastiques. Un univers dans lequel le compositeur se trouve tout &agrave; fait &agrave; son aise gr&acirc;ce &agrave; son sens de la f&eacute;&eacute;rie et du merveilleux. Autant cette &eacute;criture nous est famili&egrave;re, avec peut &ecirc;tre une plus grande insistance sur des passages libres dans l&rsquo;&eacute;criture, tr&egrave;s russes, mais elle est de surcro&icirc;t interrompue en permanence, et c&rsquo;est en cela que la construction du film, son montage, deviennent int&eacute;ressants &#8211; et compliqu&eacute;s &#8211; pour le compositeur, par les nombreuses digressions du Powerhouse de Scott.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/images\/articles\/honeyishrunkthekids.jpg\" style=\"width: 500px; height: 329px;\" \/><\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:10px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">&copy; Walt <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=5377\">Disney<\/a> Pictures&nbsp;<\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Des passages tels que <em>A New World<\/em> nous renvoient directement &agrave; l&rsquo;&eacute;criture dramatique de <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=616\"><strong>Willow<\/strong><\/a>, avec son m&eacute;lange de symphonisme et d&rsquo;instruments rares (&agrave; l&rsquo;&eacute;poque) dans le style des films fantastiques&nbsp;: fl&ucirc;te de pan, ocarina, et tout un instrumentarium qui &eacute;tend le registre des vents du LSO et que le musicien <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=5678\">Tony Hinnigan<\/a> a rendu plus familier &agrave; nos oreilles dans ces ann&eacute;es post <strong>Mission<\/strong>. James Horner avait d&eacute;j&agrave; exp&eacute;riment&eacute; de fa&ccedil;on similaire dans <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=522\"><strong>Uncommon Valor<\/strong><\/a> (Retour Vers l&rsquo;Enfer),&nbsp; <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=534\"><strong>Commando<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=550\"><strong>Project X<\/strong><\/a> ou encore dans son score rejet&eacute; de <strong>Streets Of Fire<\/strong> (Les Rues De Feu), mais jamais &agrave; un tel niveau, comme une v&eacute;ritable palette compl&eacute;mentaire de l&rsquo;orchestre. L&rsquo;orgue tient &eacute;galement une place particuli&egrave;re dans cet univers instrumental &eacute;clectique, ajoutant une touche gothique &agrave; l&rsquo;orchestration, notamment dans le terrifiant <em>Lawn Mower<\/em>. Cette approche cr&eacute;e des moments particuliers, comme lorsque une fl&ucirc;te entonne un tr&egrave;s bel hymne sur un rythme de rod&eacute;o dans <em>Flying Szalinsky<\/em>, th&egrave;me d&eacute;velopp&eacute; par ailleurs dans la partition et qui offre l&rsquo;occasion de laisser parler le phras&eacute; le plus tendre du cor ou du hautbois. Horner a vraiment un don pour ces th&egrave;mes li&eacute;s &agrave; l&rsquo;enfance et au merveilleux (comme il l&rsquo;avait prouv&eacute; cette m&ecirc;me ann&eacute;e dans <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=622\"><strong>The Land Before Time<\/strong><\/a> ou le th&egrave;me de la princesse Elora dans <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=616\"><strong>Willow<\/strong><\/a>). L&rsquo;americana &laquo;&nbsp;coplandesque&nbsp;&raquo; est &eacute;galement &agrave; l&rsquo;honneur dans le jubilatoire <em>Ant Rodeo<\/em>.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Certes, on pourra aussi &eacute;voquer le rapprochement avec le th&egrave;me des <strong>Goonies<\/strong> de Dave Grusin, s&ucirc;rement pr&eacute;sent dans la musique temporaire&hellip; Mais James Horner n&rsquo;en retient qu&rsquo;une certaine pulsion rythmique, une construction en crescendo qui lui permet de faire un lien avec l&rsquo;americana cit&eacute; dans le film, sans pour autant offrir un plagiat de l&rsquo;adorable th&egrave;me qui semble emmener Beethoven sur le terrain de l&rsquo;aventure juv&eacute;nile. Ce qu&rsquo;un <em>yes man<\/em> &agrave; la Debney aurait certainement fait tr&egrave;s bien de nos jours (soit dit en passant, cette ob&eacute;dience du score de Grusin &agrave; la musique la plus acad&eacute;mique du r&eacute;pertoire est un peu lassante&hellip;).<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">C&rsquo;est donc bien ce m&eacute;lange constant des genres qui rend finalement l&rsquo;&eacute;coute passionnante en dehors du film, un m&eacute;lange entre musique savante et musique populaire que seul le cin&eacute;ma permet. Cette mati&egrave;re musicale dramatique devenue si famili&egrave;re au cours des ann&eacute;es 80 si l&rsquo;on aime <span class=\"st_tag internal_tag\">James Horner<\/span> est pass&eacute;e brusquement au shaker et &agrave; la folie du big band des ann&eacute;es 50 ou des musiques de spectacle comme l&rsquo;affectionnait Nino Rota, pour un r&eacute;sultat bien plus abouti et joyeux que ne l&rsquo;&eacute;tait d&eacute;j&agrave; <a href=\"\/com\/?page_id=548\"><strong>Batteries Not Included<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Par David Hocquet Avec l&#39;aimable autoristaion de son auteur.
