Apr&egrave;s avoir revisit&eacute; l&rsquo;univers musical de Maurice Jarre, Jerry Goldsmith ou encore Alan Silvestri, l&rsquo;orchestre praguois s&rsquo;arrime d&eacute;sormais aux rivages horn&eacute;riens en nous proposant un voyage en deux Cds qui couvre trois d&eacute;cennies de l&rsquo;&oelig;uvre du compositeur. Sorti le 1<sup>er<\/sup> Juin dernier, cet enregistrement est en r&eacute;alit&eacute; une &eacute;dition r&eacute;actualis&eacute;e du <strong>Film Music Masterworks<\/strong> James Horner pr&eacute;c&eacute;demment enregistr&eacute; par la formation. Viennent s&rsquo;ajouter &agrave; la mouture existante des partitions r&eacute;centes telles que <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/discographie\/the-boy-in-the-striped-pyjamas\">The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/discographie\/avatar\">Avatar<\/a><\/strong> ainsi que la derni&egrave;re grande composition en date de James Horner&nbsp;: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/discographie\/the-karate-kid\">The Karate Kid<\/a><\/strong><i>. <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\">\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.silvascreen.com\/\" rel=\"\" style=\"\" target=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3493\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/silvascreencompil-300x300.png\" style=\"\" title=\"silvascreencompil\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Le City of Prague a souvent &eacute;t&eacute; d&eacute;cri&eacute; pour son faible niveau technique et son absence de rigueur. Il ne faut cependant pas oublier que l&rsquo;existence de cet ensemble orchestral rel&egrave;ve en soi du miracle. L&rsquo;ancien Film Symphony Orchestra, qui l&rsquo;a pr&eacute;c&eacute;d&eacute;, a grandi &agrave; l&rsquo;ombre des diktats du r&eacute;gime communiste et avec les pi&egrave;tres moyens dont disposaient les Studios Smecky. Apr&egrave;s la R&eacute;volution de velours, l&rsquo;orchestre aux allures de radeau de la M&eacute;duse est devenu un paquebot musical, &agrave; la navigation certes encore incertaine, mais qui chaque jour tente d&rsquo;emprunter la mer apais&eacute;e de la coh&eacute;rence et de la rigueur. Ce changement de cap est n&eacute; sous l&rsquo;impulsion cr&eacute;ative du &laquo;&nbsp;Capitaine&nbsp;&raquo; Nic Raine. Compositeur, arrangeur, chef d&rsquo;orchestre, il a &eacute;t&eacute; notamment le pr&eacute;cieux collaborateur de John Barry dans son &eacute;pop&eacute;e bondienne.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Le City of Prague a enregistr&eacute;, pour le label Silva Screen, une quarantaine de Cds &agrave; la qualit&eacute; in&eacute;gale. &Eacute;mergent toutefois de ce magma h&eacute;t&eacute;roclite un enregistrement de <strong>Raise the Titanic<\/strong> qui constitue &agrave; ce jour le seul t&eacute;moignage de cette &oelig;uvre de John Barry dont les masters originaux ont &eacute;t&eacute; &eacute;gar&eacute;s. Sous la houlette de Nic Raine, cette composition in&eacute;dite a &eacute;t&eacute; restitu&eacute;e dans une orchestration impeccable et une ex&eacute;cution soign&eacute;e.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofpraguephilharmonic.com\/fichiershtml\/ZXbionicraine.htm\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3492\" height=\"203\" src=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/nicraine-300x203.png\" title=\"nicraine\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">L&rsquo;orchestre aborde aujourd&rsquo;hui les c&ocirc;tes du rivage horn&eacute;rien &agrave; travers le choix de vingt-trois partitions. D&rsquo;embl&eacute;e, la double galette suscite les questionnements. En ce qui concerne la forme, l&rsquo;&eacute;dition se r&eacute;duit &agrave; sa plus simple expression, le livret se bornant &agrave; reproduire un article de Michael Beek qui ne nous apprend rien de plus que ce que nous savons d&eacute;j&agrave; sur <i>The Great Emotionalist<\/i> (puisque tel est le titre dudit article). Il y a lieu, par ailleurs, de s&rsquo;&eacute;tonner de l&rsquo;absence de timing des plages enregistr&eacute;es. En outre, aucun nom n&rsquo;est cr&eacute;dit&eacute;, ni celui des membres de l&rsquo;&eacute;quipage musical, ni celui de son Chef (et l&rsquo;on s&rsquo;&eacute;tonne &agrave; l&rsquo;&eacute;coute qu&rsquo;il puisse s&rsquo;agir de Nic Raine&hellip;). Sur le contenu, le choix des morceaux laisse songeur. S&rsquo;il s&rsquo;agissait de s&eacute;lectionner des titres repr&eacute;sentatifs de l&rsquo;&oelig;uvre de James Horner, force est de constater qu&rsquo;il manque quelques incontournables. Pour les &oelig;uvres les plus r&eacute;centes, on peut citer parmi les cha&icirc;nons manquants horn&eacute;riens les partitions d&rsquo;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/discographie\/iris\">Iris<\/a><\/strong> et de <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/discographie\/the-new-world\">The New World<\/a><\/strong> auxquelles il a &eacute;t&eacute; pr&eacute;f&eacute;r&eacute; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/discographie\/troy\">Troy<\/a> <\/strong>et ses accents h&eacute;rit&eacute;s de <strong>Lawrence d&rsquo;Arabie<\/strong>. Parmi les pi&egrave;ces les plus anciennes, brillent notamment par leur absence remarqu&eacute;e <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/discographie\/natty-gann\">The Journey of Natty Gann<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/discographie\/the-spitfire-grill\">The Spitfire Grill<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/discographie\/bicentennial-man\">Bicentennial Man<\/a><\/strong> ou <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/discographie\/the-perfect-storm\">The Perfect Storm<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Sur le premier disque, le City of Prague d&eacute;ploie ses notes de <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/discographie\/legends-of-the-fall\">The Legend of the fall<\/a><\/strong> &agrave; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/discographie\/the-karate-kid\">The Karate Kid<\/a><\/strong> en nous offrant un floril&egrave;ge musical plut&ocirc;t plaisant &agrave; &eacute;couter. Les &oelig;uvres du compositeur s&rsquo;encha&icirc;nent alors avec aisance et belle tenue. On aura toutefois l&rsquo;oreille un tantinet indispos&eacute;e par une reprise inutile de <i>My Heart will go on<\/i> et une introduction du <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/discographie\/the-mask-of-zorro\">Masque de Zorro<\/a><\/strong> approximative, les percussions, sens&eacute;es remplacer les pas des danseurs, apparaissant quelque peu d&eacute;routantes au regard de la rythmique originelle. Mais ce ne sont que d&rsquo;insignifiants d&eacute;tails en comparaison de ce que nous r&eacute;serve le second disque.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Et la d&eacute;ception est de taille. Outre le tempo trop lent de<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/discographie\/the-man-without-a-face\">The Man without A Face<\/a><\/strong> et les accents criards dont se retrouvent affubl&eacute;s les deux morceaux&nbsp;&laquo;&nbsp;trekkiens&nbsp;&raquo;, c&rsquo;est surtout la relecture de<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/discographie\/glory\"><i>Glory<\/i><\/a> <\/strong>qui d&eacute;sar&ccedil;onnera l&rsquo;auditeur averti. Les morceaux <i>Charging Fort Wagner<\/i> et <i>End title<\/i> sont des &oelig;uvres magistrales, v&eacute;ritable requiem d&eacute;di&eacute; &agrave; des soldats aux portes de leur tombeau. En les restituant d&rsquo;une mani&egrave;re pour le moins poussive, l&rsquo;interpr&eacute;tation des ch&oelig;urs du City Of Prague vire tout simplement au massacre organis&eacute;. Les parties chorales sont &agrave; ce point d&eacute;natur&eacute;es qu&rsquo;il est impossible de reconna&icirc;tre l&rsquo;&oelig;uvre originelle. Les ch&oelig;urs chantent (mais on ne sait quoi) sur des motifs et un tempo hors de propos. Le reste des titres de ce second disque, qui en l&rsquo;occurrence auraient pu &ecirc;tre mieux choisis, parach&egrave;ve le sentiment de rendez-vous manqu&eacute; avec le compositeur.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/images\/articles\/glory2.png\" style=\"width: 400px; height: 262px;\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">A la lumi&egrave;re de ce constat, cet enregistrement ouvre le d&eacute;bat en nous amenant &agrave; nous interroger sur la l&eacute;gitimit&eacute; de tels hommages qui conduisent &agrave; revisiter l&rsquo;&oelig;uvre d&rsquo;un artiste avec plus ou moins d&rsquo;inspiration. N&rsquo;appellent &eacute;videmment aucune r&eacute;serve les &eacute;ditions qui se proposent de faire red&eacute;couvrir une &oelig;uvre qui aurait &eacute;t&eacute;, sans cette initiative, perdue &agrave; jamais, ce qui pr&eacute;cis&eacute;ment le cas de <strong>Raise The Titanic.<\/strong> Mais en dehors de cet exemple pr&eacute;cis, qu&rsquo;en est-il vraiment de ces relectures qui n&#39;offrent rien d&#39;autre qu&#39;une perception d&eacute;form&eacute;e des oeuvres originales?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Force est alors de constater qu&#39;en mati&egrave;re&nbsp;de r&eacute;enregistrements, l&#39;histoire a d&eacute;montr&eacute; qu&rsquo;il y&nbsp;a une r&eacute;elle difficult&eacute; a restituer fid&egrave;lement l&#39;empreinte musicale de James Horner.<span id=\"yui_3_2_0_16_1318080842000213\" style=\"line-height: 115%;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Remarquable orchestrateur, le compositeur a fait na&icirc;tre ses partitions avec un sens aigu du d&eacute;tail, des nuances et des couleurs qui n&rsquo;est pas ais&eacute; &agrave; reproduire. Monsieur Horner livre une musique qui semble prendre tout son sens au fur et &agrave; mesure qu&rsquo;elle &eacute;mane de sa plume. C&rsquo;est pr&eacute;cis&eacute;ment cet engagement tr&egrave;s personnel dans son &oelig;uvre qui produit la singularit&eacute; de son art et rend ainsi ce dernier particuli&egrave;rement d&eacute;licat &agrave; appr&eacute;hender.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">D&egrave;s lors, comment revisiter ces musiques sans les d&eacute;naturer&nbsp;? Cette question constitue le second versant des interrogations qui nous assaillent &agrave; l&rsquo;&eacute;coute de la prestation du City of Prague. Doit-on scrupuleusement respecter &agrave; la lettre des notes ou bien peut-on faire &oelig;uvre cr&eacute;atrice tout en pr&eacute;servant l&rsquo;esprit que le compositeur a conf&eacute;r&eacute; &agrave; son&nbsp;&oelig;uvre? Autant de questions auxquelles il conviendrait de r&eacute;fl&eacute;chir avant de se lancer dans l&rsquo;exercice hautement p&eacute;rilleux de la relecture d&rsquo;une composition. Cela &eacute;viterait bien des rendez-vous manqu&eacute;s.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Un seul chef d&#39;orchestre a su toutefois se poser les interrogations qu&#39;il convient. Il s&#39;agit d&#39; Erich Kunzel qui a r&eacute;alis&eacute;, &agrave; la t&ecirc;te du Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, pour le label Telec, devenu ensuite Concord Music, des relectures grandioses des partitions de James Horner. Celles-ci ont <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">m&ecirc;me <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">parfois d&eacute;pass&eacute; la richesse orchestrale des &oelig;uvres originelles. Par exemple je garde un souvenir vivace d&#39;une interpr&eacute;tation m&eacute;morable du <em>Main title<\/em> et d&#39;<em>End Credits<\/em> de <strong><u><a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/discographie\/star-trek-ii\">Star Trek II<\/a><\/u><\/strong>. Les relectures somptueuses de Kunzel trouvent sans doute leurs racines dans un sens aigu de l&#39;orchestration, h&eacute;ritage du grand chef d&#39;orchestre fran&ccedil;ais Pierre Monteux, dont il fut l&#39;assistant pendant de nombreuses ann&eacute;es. L&#39;&eacute;coute de l&#39;<strong>Ultimate Movie Music Collection<\/strong> rend compte de tout l&#39;art d&#39;Erich Kunzel d&#39;habiter une partition et d&#39;en sublimer le meilleur. Les interpr&eacute;tations du chef d&#39;orchestre m&eacute;riteraient &agrave; elles seules une &eacute;tude distincte.
