\n\tSuite à l'écoute de Black Gold<\/a><\/strong>, une évidence s'est imposée à nous : Dhafer Youssef<\/a> est la voix centrale de l'album. Nous étions alors impatients d'évoquer avec lui son expérience sur l'enregistrement de la dernière bande originale signée James Horner. Dès le début de l'entretien, le chanteur Tunisien nous a précisé qu'il accordait rarement d'interviews, donnant ainsi à sa présence dans nos colonnes le statut de mini évènement. Puis il a clairement exprimé sa volonté d'aller à l'essentiel, c'est-à-dire sa rencontre avec James Horner.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n

\n\tConnaissiez-vous James Horner avant de travailler avec lui sur Black Gold<\/a> ?<\/strong>
\n\tSincèrement, je ne connaissais pas vraiment James Horner. J'avais bien aimé les musiques d'Avatar et de Titanic sans pour autant connaître le nom de leur compositeur. J'avais connaissance de son travail, mais le problème était simplement que je ne m'intéressais pas aux noms derrière la musique.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\n\t \n<\/div>\n
\n\tComment êtes-vous arrivé sur le projet ?<\/strong><\/span><\/span>
\n\tGrâce à Susheela Raman<\/a> (autre vocaliste sur Black Gold<\/a>) et son époux, des collègues que j’apprécie beaucoup. Une de leurs connaissances, proche de James, cherchait un chanteur arabe. Alors ils m'ont contacté. Au départ j'ai hésité, car c'était la fin de la saison, je finissais <\/span><\/span>une longue tournée, mais je me suis décidé à partir pour Londres, sans en attendre grand chose.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\n\t \n<\/div>\n
\n\t\"\"<\/strong><\/span><\/span>Et comment ça s'est passé ?<\/strong><\/span><\/span>
\n\tCe fut une super expérience, surtout que, comme je vous l'ai dit, je ne savais pas du tout à quoi m'attendre. Enregistrer en studio est quelque chose que je fais de temps en temps, mais dès que les conditions souhaitées sont réunies. A ce moment-là de l'année, j'avais surtout envie de finir le travail et de partir en vacances.
\n\tDès mon arrivée, j'ai entendu « C'est James Horner ! Celui qui a fait ça et ça… », mais finalement James est très humble, il ne joue pas à la star et c'est un musicien à « 1000 pour cent ». C'est pour cela qu'au niveau musical nous nous sommes très bien entendus, comme si nous étions un peu de la même famille. Je fus étonné de voir devant moi un grand maître, qui semble ne vivre que pour la musique et qui laisse son ego de côté dès qu'il traverse la porte du studio. C'est ce que j'ai adoré chez lui. Il travaille avec tout le monde, le travail en équipe est formidable, c'est une vraie famille, et le plus impressionnant c'est que dès mon arrivée, ils m'ont accepté. Je me suis senti alors vraiment chez moi.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\n\t \n<\/div>\n
\n\tQue retenez-vous d’un point de vue musical ? Avez-vous écouté l'album ?<\/strong>
\n\tA vrai dire, ça ne m’intéresse pas. Ce que je veux retenir de ce que je fais, c'est l'instant vécu, le travail effectué sur le moment avec cette famille. Après le reste n'appartient ni à moi, ni à James mais aux autres personnes. C'est le pourquoi d'un disque. L'important est que cette musique se différencie de celle que je fais habituellement dans la mesure où il s’agit d’une musique qui existe pour l'image. Or, ce n'est pas mon domaine. Certes ma musique pourrait être montée sur beaucoup d'images, mais je ne suis pas un compositeur de musique de films. Ce que fait James est d'un autre calibre, d'un autre niveau, et c'est magnifique.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\n\t \n<\/div>\n
\n\tJustement, le piano mélancolique de James Horner et votre voix se marient très bien ensemble, créant ainsi des moments intimistes. Vous attendiez-vous à ce qu'un jour un compositeur utilise ainsi votre talent vocal ?<\/strong>
\n\tIl m'est difficile de parler de la musique. C’est pour moi quelque chose de très personnel, de très intime. Je préfère laisser les autres personnes en parler. L'essentiel pour moi est de me sentir bien, de travailler avec des musiciens du monde entier qui m'inspirent. C'est un cadeau de Dieu ou de la nature. Travailler avec James Horner et son équipe en est un parfait exemple.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\n\t \n<\/div>\n
\n\tDans ce cas, vous n'allez pas pouvoir nous dire dans quel état d'esprit vous vous trouvez quand vous devez chanter et exprimer la tristesse, le désespoir ?<\/strong>
\n\tEffectivement je ne peux pas en parler car je le vis sur le moment. C'est quelque chose que je ne contrôle pas. Bien sûr je contrôle la technique mais les sentiments reviennent, se répètent au moment voulu, et résonnent en moi. Mon corps devient un instrument et l'inspiration vient du piano ou d'un autre instrument, car ils m'obligent à emprunter telle ou telle direction.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\n\t \n<\/div>\n
\n\t\"\"<\/strong><\/span><\/span>Vous exercez votre talent actuellement dans un quartet où vous arrivez à fusionner les rythmiques du jazz occidental et des <\/strong><\/span><\/span>éléments de la musique orientale. Ne trouvez-vous pas que cela se rapproche de la fusion que recherche également James Horner dans ses partitions, quand il mélange l'orchestre et des sonorités ethniques ?<\/strong><\/span><\/span>
\n\tIl faut savoir que je ne suis pas jazzman mais autodidacte. Beaucoup de musiciens me disent<\/span><\/span> que c'est une chance de ne pas avoir étudié la musique. Certes c'est peut-être un atout, mais<\/span><\/span> je finis par me dire aussi que, depuis mes débuts à l'âge de cinq ans, et mon parcours professionnel depuis vingt-cinq ans, j'ai des acquis plus conformes, je maîtrise la musique, ce qui permet de m'ouvrir à diverses choses. Il est vrai que ma musique rassemble et place en harmonie différentes cultures. Aujourd'hui, quelqu'un qui écoute ma musique va se demander « mais d'où vient cette musique ? » En ce qui me concerne, c'est de savoir si elle le touche ou pas qui m’intéresse. C'est une question que nous pouvons nous poser dans l'art en général, et surtout avec la musique car son effet est très direct. Or je pense qu’à travers ma musique je parle un langage universel. Quand je joue dans un pays comme la Turquie, à Sarajevo, Beyrouth ou encore Tunis, je parviens à les toucher car je leur rappelle leur identité un peu perdue entre deux continents. Ma musique constitue un pont entre l'Occident et l'Orient. La mélancolie et la tristesse qui s'en dégagent proviennent de cette identité.
\n\tJames Horner partage avec moi ce même lien, ses sentiments qui se dégagent de la musique. Je ne l'ai vu que trois jours, pourtant j'ai eu la sensation de le connaître depuis le début de ma carrière. Ce n'est certes pas rare, mais quand il me donnait des consignes j'avais comme l'impression de le connaître depuis longtemps.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/div>\n
