Je voulais &ecirc;tre un compositeur. C&rsquo;&eacute;tait ma vocation &raquo;. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">&laquo;&nbsp;Je faisais mes &eacute;tudes de musique et mon plan &eacute;tait essentiellement d&#39;&eacute;crire de la musique classique avant-gardiste s&eacute;rieuse et d&#39;exister dans le monde des subventions et des commissions. Pour cela, vous avez vraiment besoin d&#39;&ecirc;tre ancr&eacute; solidement dans une universit&eacute;, d&#39;&ecirc;tre un professeur &raquo;. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:11px;\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">Le hasard a voulu qu&#39;un jour on propose &agrave; James Horner d&#39;&eacute;crire la musique d&#39;un film d&#39;&eacute;tudiant pour l&#39;Institut du Film Am&eacute;ricain (AFI), organisation ind&eacute;pendante &agrave; but non lucratif qui se concentre sur l&#39;enseignement pour former des professionnels du cin&eacute;ma et de la t&eacute;l&eacute;vision.<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n\t\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">&laquo; J&#39;avais une de mes pi&egrave;ces qui &eacute;tait interpr&eacute;t&eacute;e et le directeur de l&#39;American Film Institute &eacute;tait dans le public. Il m&#39;a demand&eacute; si je pensais pouvoir faire la musique d&#39;un film. J&#39;ai r&eacute;pondu certainement, que je pouvais faire un essai &raquo;. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:11px;\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">Nous pensons que la pi&egrave;ce dont parle James Horner n&#39;est pas <strong>Spectral Shimmers<\/strong> car son unique repr&eacute;sentation a eu lieu en janvier 1979 c&#39;est &agrave; dire apr&egrave;s les compositions pour l&#39;AFI. <\/span>\n\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">Au moment de s&#39;engager avec l&#39;AFI, James Horner est vite confront&eacute; &agrave; deux difficult&eacute;s&nbsp;: son inexp&eacute;rience dans la musique de film, et le manque de budget des projets:<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">&laquo;&nbsp;Il n&#39;y avait pas d&#39;argent. Ils pouvaient &agrave; peine payer les musiciens. J&#39;&eacute;tais d&eacute;muni. Et je n&#39;avais aucune formation dans l&#39;art cin&eacute;matographique. J&#39;ai donc saut&eacute; le pas et appris le m&eacute;tier. J&#39;ai d&ucirc; aussi mentir sur mon parcours au d&eacute;but. J&#39;&eacute;tais trop g&ecirc;n&eacute; pour dire que je ne savais pas &raquo;. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:11px;\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/dick_lowry.jpg\" style=\"float: left; width: 125px; height: 125px; margin: 5px 10px;box-shadow: 2px 2px 5px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.5);\" \/>Sa premi&egrave;re exp&eacute;rience fut sur <strong>The Drought<\/strong>, un long-m&eacute;trage r&eacute;alis&eacute; par Dick Lowry (photo), r&eacute;alisateur avec lequel James Horner retravaillera &agrave; trois reprises pour des t&eacute;l&eacute;films&nbsp;: <strong>Angel Dusted<\/strong> (1981), <strong>A Few Days in Weasel Creek<\/strong> (1981) et <a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/com\/?page_id=9524\">Rascals and Robbers: The Secret Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn<\/a> (1982). A noter que <strong>The Drought<\/strong> met en sc&egrave;ne le prolifique Clu Gulager, acteur que nous croiserons &agrave; nouveau une d&eacute;cennie plus tard dans <a href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/discographie\/my-heroes-have-always-been-cowboys\"><strong>My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys<\/strong><\/a> (1991).<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">&laquo;&nbsp;On m&#39;a demand&eacute; de faire la musique de <strong>The Drought<\/strong>. Je me suis dit &laquo;&nbsp;pourquoi pas&nbsp;&raquo;. Je suis tomb&eacute; amoureux du film, comme un coup de foudre. J&#39;ai instantan&eacute;ment su ce que je voulais faire&nbsp;: &eacute;crire de la musique de films &raquo;. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:11px;\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">Ces premi&egrave;res compositions pour l&#39;image et celles qui suivront au d&eacute;but des ann&eacute;es 80 sont un d&eacute;clic au m&ecirc;me titre que l&#39;&eacute;coute du deuxi&egrave;me mouvement de la 7&egrave;me symphonie de Beethoven qui lui avait donn&eacute; envie de devenir compositeur (<a href=\"https:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/fr\/fond-memories-episode-1-1953-1978-une-education-musicale\/\">voir &eacute;pisode 1<\/a>).<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">&laquo;&nbsp;Une fois que j&#39;eus &eacute;crit ma premi&egrave;re pi&egrave;ce de musique pour l&#39;image, je suis tomb&eacute; amoureux d&#39;elle. Un vrai coup de foudre. J&#39;ai compris que je pourrais &eacute;crire tout ce que je voulais et sans qu&#39;une &eacute;tiquette soit attach&eacute;e &agrave; mon travail. Je n&#39;&eacute;tais plus consid&eacute;r&eacute; comme conservateur, comme avant-gardiste ou quelque chose entre les deux &raquo;. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:11px;\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">&laquo;&nbsp;C&#39;est ma seconde r&eacute;v&eacute;lation: quand j&#39;ai r&eacute;alis&eacute; que mes compositions pourraient changer en fonction de la mati&egrave;re pour laquelle j&#39;&eacute;crivais&nbsp;: pour les films d&#39;horreur, les westerns, les films de science-fiction, les histoires d&#39;amour. Ces films exigent tous des types de composition tr&egrave;s diff&eacute;rents, et j&#39;ai &eacute;t&eacute; s&eacute;duit par la capacit&eacute; qu&rsquo;a la musique de raconter des histoires quand elle est mari&eacute;e &agrave; l&#39;image &raquo;. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:11px;\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">Depuis toujours passionn&eacute; par le c&ocirc;t&eacute; dramaturgique de la musique, il lui appara&icirc;t &eacute;vident, d&egrave;s ces premi&egrave;res &eacute;critures, &laquo;&nbsp;<em>qu&#39;associ&eacute;e aux images, la musique est mille fois plus puissante et &eacute;mouvante que seule<\/em> &raquo;. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:11px;\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">&laquo;&nbsp;Alors j&#39;ai tourn&eacute; le dos au monde universitaire et tout ce qui va avec, j&#39;ai connu un revirement de situation apr&egrave;s avoir pass&eacute; toute ma vie dans les conservatoires, j&#39;ai port&eacute; toute mon attention vers la musique de film &raquo;. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:11px;\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">La musique de films appara&icirc;t &eacute;galement pour James Horner comme le moyen id&eacute;al d&#39;entendre imm&eacute;diatement le fruit de son travail, de se retrouver rapidement devant un orchestre &agrave; diriger sa musique compos&eacute;e une semaine plus t&ocirc;t. C&#39;est &agrave; ses yeux un contraste saisissant avec les semaines et les mois de lutte rencontr&eacute;s au sein du monde de la musique de concert pour r&eacute;ussir &agrave; faire jouer <strong>Spectral Shimmers<\/strong>, ou pour qu&#39;un petit ensemble daigne jouer une de ses &oelig;uvres.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">&laquo;&nbsp;Nulle part ailleurs vous obtenez la possibilit&eacute; d&#39;&eacute;crire quelque chose, et d&#39;&ecirc;tre quatre semaines plus tard, debout devant les meilleurs musiciens de la ville, &agrave; entendre votre travail. C&#39;est la meilleure exp&eacute;rience d&#39;apprentissage au monde &raquo;. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:11px;\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">Enfin la musique de films semble un moyen de toucher un public plus large, balayant l&#39;impact limit&eacute; ressenti lors de la repr&eacute;sentation de <strong>Spectral Shimmers<\/strong>. <\/span>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">&laquo;&nbsp;Quand j&#39;ai quitt&eacute; le conservatoire, puis l&#39;&eacute;cole, et que je j&#39;ai commenc&eacute; &agrave; &eacute;crire pour le cin&eacute;ma, je me suis dit que j&#39;avais trouv&eacute; un nouveau m&eacute;dia qui me convenait, parce que je pensais que d&#39;aller dans une salle sinistre pour y &eacute;couter Strauss ou Bruckner ou Mahler interpr&eacute;t&eacute; pour le jeune public, &ccedil;a n&#39;allait plus marcher pour moi. Ce qui int&eacute;ressait le jeune public, c&#39;&eacute;tait un monde o&ugrave; il y aurait un m&eacute;lange de danse et de musique, ou de film et de musique, et c&#39;est ce qui m&#39;a vraiment amen&eacute; &agrave; la musique de film, car c&#39;est un m&eacute;dia mixte &raquo;. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:12px;\">1<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\"><a class=\"lightbox\" href=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/royce_hall_ucla.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/jameshorner-filmmusic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/royce_hall_ucla.jpg\" style=\"margin: 5px 10px; float: right; width: 200px; height: 150px;box-shadow: 2px 2px 5px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.5);\" \/><\/a>Une puissance accentu&eacute;e par les images, un confort pour faire interpr&eacute;ter sa musique, un public touch&eacute; plus large,<\/span> <span style=\"font-size:16px;\">l&#39;exp&eacute;rience <strong>Spectral Shimmers<\/strong>, tous ces &eacute;l&eacute;ments ont jou&eacute; en faveur de la musique de films face au monde de la musique contemporaine, que James Horner a toujours consid&eacute;r&eacute; &laquo;&nbsp;<em>en train de mourir<\/em> &raquo;. <\/span><span style=\"font-size:11px;\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/span><br \/>\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">Tout en enseignant un cours de th&eacute;orie de la musique &agrave; l&#39;UCLA, James Horner compose en 1978 pour l&#39;AFI la musique de cinq autres films m&eacute;connus&nbsp;: <strong>The Watcher<\/strong>, <strong>Just for a Laugh<\/strong>, <strong>Landscapes<\/strong>, <strong>Gist and Evans<\/strong> and <strong>Fantasies<\/strong>.<\/span><br \/>\n\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">Toutefois il a travaill&eacute; &eacute;galement sur de multiples films d&#39;&eacute;tudiants:<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t\t<span style=\"font-size:16px;\">&laquo; J&#39;ai fait sept ou huit films pour l&#39;AFI et un tas de films d&#39;&eacute;tudiants, et peu &agrave; peu je suis all&eacute; vers des films ind&eacute;pendants &agrave; petit budget, et ensuite des films ind&eacute;pendants avec des budgets plus &eacute;lev&eacute;s.
