STAR TREK II ARCHIVES: STARLOG AND CINEFANTASTIQUE
As part of the writing of Episode 6 of Fond Memories, we found two articles originally published in Cinefantastique and Starlog. We propose them as transcripts below. Special thanks to Ken Hanley (Fangoria), Randall D. Larson, Chodisetti-Ravi Shankar Chandra, Byron Brassel and John Andrews. Going back in time to October 1982, from the 63rd issue of the famous, long since deceased Starlog magazine, comes a geriatric interview with a young James Horner about the scoring of the endearing cinematic triumph: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.Having been written in a time when the name James Horner was not known to[...]
FOND MEMORIES - EPISODE 4: 1981 - A HORROR TRILOGY
This episode homes in on the horror trilogy written in 1981: Oliver Stone's The Hand, Wes Craven's Deadly Blessing and Michael Wadleigh's Wolfen. If you have information that can supplement this episode, please do not hesitate to contact us. This episode covers the following scores:The Hand (1981)Deadly Blessing (1981)Wolfen (1981) After the two monster movies he did for Roger Corman, Up From The Depths (1979) and Humanoids From The Deep (1980), not surprisingly, James Horner was starting to be typecast as a horror movie guy. “I worked for Roger Corman at New World Pictures and various other independents until I got my first[...]
WOLF TOTEM: JAMES AND THE WOLF
Hardly for the first time in a career comprised of more than 130 film scores did James Horner cross paths with the wolf, a fascinating mammal and a source of countless stories, rumors and legends. Their first meeting dates back to 1981, when Wolfen, a horror thriller by Michael Wadleigh (Woodstock) saw Indians-turned-wolves create havoc in the streets of New York. Distressing brass embodied the wolf’s dark side and its sharp fangs, continually threatening tender and innocent flesh. This musical darkness was reprised a few years later with Aliens (1986), where it evoked the stifling atmosphere created by James Cameron, illustrating the[...]
CINEMASCORE COMBINED HORNER ARTICLES
The early 1980s was a watershed time in film music. After the success of Star Wars, studios began producing a flood of science fiction/fantasy & action/adventure films, calling for magical, exciting, and densely orchestrated music. A whole new crop of young composers were stepping up to the challenge. It was an exciting time to be a fan of film music; but it was also a lonely time. The robust, inter-connected community of soundtrack lovers did not exist. Film Score Monthly and jwfan.com did not exist. There was no group known as Fans of Film Music. No composer pages, no FilmTracks soundtrack[...]
