PAS DE DEUX: A DANCE CONCERTO

This article was written in May 2015 and was to be part of our special dossier on Pas De Deux and the concert in Stavanger for the first issue of Allegretto.   Now that James Horner feels he has more or less achieved what he wanted to achieve in film scoring, he makes a foray into the concert hall, a world he grew up in but said his goodbyes to well over three decades ago. Of his own admission, it is with a sense of trepidation that he embarks on this career shift, learning from fellow film composers before him that it[...]

NORWEGIAN PREMIERE OF PAS DE DEUX - THE BIG DAY

Six months after the world premiere in Liverpool, Mari and Håkon Samuelsen brings Pas De Deux to their home country of Norway in a spectacular concert in Stavanger, which also saw James Horner himself conduct suites from Braveheart, Titanic and Wolf Totem. [divider]Dress Rehearsal and boat ride to the Pulpit Rock[/divider] Wednesday morning, I attended the dress rehearsal for the concert. This was my first time hearing Pas De Deux, which I will come back to later. In short, the concert audience were in for a treat! The other selections from the programme also sounded great and ready for live performance. Still,[...]

NORWEGIAN PREMIERE OF PAS DE DEUX - REHEARSAL

The Stavanger Concert House is an impressive-looking building even from the outside. Opened in 2012, the Fartein Valen concert hall with its 1500 seats has already been renowned internationally for its impressive acoustics. What a great place for a night of James Horner music, including the Nordic premiere of Pas de Deux. James Horner Film Music has been fortunate to enjoy a very good relationship with Mari and Håkon Samuelsen, even preceding the Pas de Deux premier in Liverpool last fall. Once again, we have been allowed to watch up close as this unique event comes together.   As previously reported, James Horner[...]

PAS DE DEUX: THE TRAILER

Universal Music has just put online a video of the world premiere of Pas de Deux, which took place just a month ago in Liverpool, announcing a CD album of the double concerto for May 2015. For three minutes we hear several passages of the concert piece composed by James Horner for Mari Hakon Samuelsen: The video begins with the taiko, which signals the spectacular finale of Pas de Deux. This incredible conclusion can be heard between 0'00 and 0'38 then from 1'57 to 3'12. Throughout the 30 minutes of Pas de Deux, quiet interludes interspersed between each orchestral climbs, one of them[...]

CONVERSATION WITH JAMES HORNER

"If you build it he will come ..." Just like Ray Kinsella, the character played by Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams, a voice (or rather my intuition) led me to create the Association and the James Horner Film Music website. Every minute, every hour spent working for this project was partly guided by an objective I held close in my heart: publish a new, previously unreleased conversation with James Horner. I gave myself five years to get there. Next January we will celebrate four years of JHFM... Unlike the composer, who never listens again to his old music and who never[...]

PAS DE DEUX: AN INSIDE LOOK - PART 2

Norway, home to Hakon and Mari Samuelsen must be a welcoming country if all its inhabitants are as generous as our two talented musicians. Indeed, Mari and Hakon spontaneously invited us to come to Liverpool to attend a part of the adventure Pas de Deux. And what an adventure! [divider]DAY 1[/divider] Wednesday evening, we were invited to a rehearsal of the work composed by James Horner. The session lasted an hour in a Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, whose renovation was almost complete. Artistic Director Sandra Parr reassured us by confirming us that everything would be ready for the big premiere the following[...]

PAS DE DEUX - WORLD PREMIERE: PRESS REVIEWS

In early anticipation of our own articles, we collect here all the articles published in the press about Pas de Deux, the double concerto written by James Horner, the world premiere of which took place on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. [divider]INTERVIEWS[/divider] Here are two interviews where James Horner discusses the creation of Pas de Deux and his reasons for returning to the concert world.   Titanic and Avatar composer turns his hand to ballet with work premiering with RLPO By Catherine Jones, 10th November 2014     How I wrote… Pas de Deux – James Horner By Rob Weinberg, 13th November[...]

61 AND NEW CONTENT ON THE SITE

61, Happy Birthday Maestro! Remember when we celebrated James Horner's 60th birthday on 14 August 2013 by publishing a long nostalgic article remembering good times past, and sprinkled with a hint of pessimism about the composer's future of his career. (See here) A year later, the gloom changed into impatience, joy and excitement. Impatience because we are only a few weeks away from the premiere of the Double Concerto Pas de Deux. The piece for four horns will then follow next spring. Joy because his music will resound again in theaters with Gabriele Muccino's film by Fathers and Daughters and with the documentary[...]

PAS DE DEUX: AN INSIDE LOOK - PART 1

In addition to being charming and talented musicians, Hakon and Mari Samuelsen are also accessible and generous. Indeed they didn't hesitate an instant to share with us the genesis of Pas de Deux, the Double Concerto for violin and cello composed by James Horner whose world premieres are scheduled for 13 and 14 November 2014. We are very pleased to publish their first words on the creative process of this major musical event.   In 2012 we learnt that James Horner was composing a double concerto for violin and cello. The composer's comments on your site date back from 2011; this is[...]

A TITLE AND A CD FOR THE DOUBLE CONCERTO!

The charismatic violin and cello duo Mari and Hakon Samuelsen has announced us via Mercury Classics that the first album of their exclusive long-term recording partnership recently entered into with the record company will be James Horner's double concerto.   Entitled Pas de deux, the album is scheduled for release next Spring 2015. Commissioned for Mari and Hakon to expand the repertoire for violin and cello duo, the piece will be premiered and recorded with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Vasily Petrenko.   This is very good news for those who will not be attending the two concerts in November 2014[...]
