UNEXPECTED NEW EDITION OF STAR TREK II FROM LA-LA LAND: OUR EXCLUSIVE REVIEW

Since the release of Intrada’s extended edition of The Land Before Time in October 2020, which presented 15 minutes of unreleased music, we had been feverishly waiting for a new album for 10 months. The surprise comes this time from the good people of La-La Land Records, who invite us as of this August 17th, 2021 to dive into another score of the 80s: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. In this article we will not make any musical commentaries; we will not analyze each theme or each track composed by James Horner. For that we invite you to read[...]

[REVIEW] JAMES HORNER: A LIFE IN MUSIC AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL

A few days after the death of James Horner, Robert Folk had suggested on Facebook the idea of producing a tribute concert bringing together his closest collaborators. Three and a half years later, this concert finally took place, thanks to Avex Classics, already responsible for Titanic Live and Aliens Live.   Vocalist Clara Sanabras, who worked with James Horner on For Greater Glory (2011), and legendary Irish bagpiper Eric Rigler (Braveheart, Titanic) were on stage. The collaborators Simon Rhodes, faithful sound engineer since 1998, and Joe E Rand, musical publisher on about thirty projects, were among the spectators. Sara, wife of[...]

NEW HORNER COMPILATION CD FOR SOLO PIANO ANNOUNCED

A new album titled Braveheart: The Film Music of James Horner for Solo Piano has been published by BuySoundtrax Records (BSX), the label that brought us Humanoids from the Deep and Battle Beyond the Stars in 2011. Arranged and performed by Dan Redfeld, the album features selections from some of Horner’s best-loved scores, including The Wedding from Deep Impact, The Ludlows from Legends of the Fall, and Rocketeer to the Rescue from The Rocketeer. It also features some less prominent pieces, such as the love themes from Krull and Battle Beyond the Stars, and Darby’s Theme from The Pelican Brief.[...]

STAR TREK II ARCHIVES: STARLOG AND CINEFANTASTIQUE

As part of the writing of Episode 6 of Fond Memories, we found two articles originally published in Cinefantastique and Starlog. We propose them as transcripts below. Special thanks to Ken Hanley (Fangoria), Randall D. Larson, Chodisetti-Ravi Shankar Chandra, Byron Brassel and John Andrews.   [divider]Starlog Number 63, October 1982[/divider] Going back in time to October 1982, from the 63rd issue of the famous, long since deceased Starlog magazine, comes a geriatric interview with a young James Horner about the scoring of the endearing cinematic triumph: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Having been written in a time when the name James Horner[...]

FOND MEMORIES - EPISODE 6: 1982-1984 - JERRY GOLDSMITH AND STAR TREK

This episode focuses on Star Trek II and III and Jerry Goldsmith’s influence on the early stages of James Horner’s career. If you have information that could supplement this episode, please do not hesitate to contact us.   This episode covers the following scores: Star Trek II, The Wrath of Khan (1982) Star Trek III, The Search for Spock (1984)   [divider]1982-1984: JERRY GOLDSMITH AND STAR TREK[/divider] The previous episodes of Fond Memories made several mentions of Jerry Goldsmith’s influence on the young Horner: such intimate dramas as Lilies of The Field (1963) and A Patch of Blue (1965) seep through in The Lady in Red (1979),[...]

DUBLIN 2015: A TRIBUTE TO JAMES HORNER

In the months that have passed since James Horner’s tragic death last June, already several tribute concerts have been performed around the world. These events serve both to preserve the composer’s legacy and also remind us that Horner’s body of work now fully belongs to the history books of music. One of the first concerts that was announced and performed took place in Dublin in September. Performed by the RTE Concert Orchestra, conducted by the well known conductor David Brophy, the concert offered several highlights from Horner’s career. We were fortunate enough to be invited to one of the rehearsals,[...]

BAFTA GURU: A CONVERSATION WITH JAMES HORNER

29 April 2015. With host Tommy Pearson and a small audience, an important 75 minutes was to unfold. It is disheartening to note that this, a typical but always insightful interview with Tommy Pearson, would be the last interview our late maestro would give before his sudden passing on June 22, 2015. With this in mind, the angelic manners of James Horner's conveyance of thought are ever more heartbreaking as he describes some of his career highlights and passions to Tommy and the audience. His wonderfully unique way thinking and speaking those thoughts will be as sorely missed as the mystical[...]

AUSTRALIA, 1991: JAMES HORNER SEMINARS

Having published interviews given in the early 80's to the CinemaScore magazine (see our article), we continue our exploration of the archives of the past with the publication of the two seminars which James Horner participated in, December 1991 in Australia.   That year, the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) was celebrating film music with a series of courses and activities to recognize and celebrate the contribution that music makes to the screen experience. James Horner had made the trip to take part in a variety of national activities intended to stimulate an atmosphere of appreciation for the work of[...]

CINEMASCORE COMBINED HORNER ARTICLES

The early 1980s was a watershed time in film music. After the success of Star Wars, studios began producing a flood of science fiction/fantasy & action/adventure films, calling for magical, exciting, and densely orchestrated music. A whole new crop of young composers were stepping up to the challenge.   It was an exciting time to be a fan of film music; but it was also a lonely time. The robust, inter-connected community of soundtrack lovers did not exist. Film Score Monthly and jwfan.com did not exist. There was no group known as Fans of Film Music. No composer pages, no FilmTracks soundtrack[...]
