Ralph Grierson est né le 23 juin 1942 près de Vancouver. Il a commencé à étudier la musique à l'âge de cinq ans puis à l'Université de Californie du Sud jusqu'à ses 20 ans.
Il a joué avec le Los Angeles Philharmonic, a travaillé avec des chefs, compositeurs et musiciens comme Michael Tilson Thomas, Pierre Boulez, Lukas Foss, Aaron Copland, Steve Reich, Morton Subotnick et Pinchas Zukerman.
Grierson est un talentueux compositeur. Il travaille sur une grande variété d'instruments à clavier : piano classique, clavecin, synthétiseurs…
