JAMES HORNER - FIVE YEARS AFTER

Exactly five years have gone by since James Horner passed away. On a Monday, like today. Five years ago. That's both a lot and so little. The shock was so great; the memory of that sad day is forever seared into our consciousness and will remain so despite the passage of time. Even though we busy ourselves on our various projects, today we wanted to pay tribute to James. We reached out to his friends, his peers, his collaborators and his family and asked them to share their memories and thoughts. We are proud to present a 20-minute video with all

MEMORIES OF LONDON AND STAVANGER
BY KARIM CHAMMAS

When Jean-Baptiste asked me if I wanted to write something regarding Cristiada, I looked up the only two texts I have ever written regarding James. One in 2011 after the visit at Abbey Road for the old Hornershrine, and one after James passed away in 2015. Reading both now feels like there are ages between them, probably the only similarity being that I had trouble putting my feelings into words both times. I can remember the excitement and that overwhelming surreal feeling of having experienced something so out of the ordinary in 2011, but also the insecurity of probably having

SECOND ANALYSIS OF THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

To celebrate the release this week of The Magnificent Seven discs, we re-present our thematic analysis of the score, with several adjustments, additions and corrections. As before, the cues will be explored in chronological order, this time including unreleased cues. We will also be more specific about plot details, in order to more accurately explore the relationship between music and movie. This means that this article will contain abundant spoilers. If you haven’t seen the film yet, we would strongly encourage you to do so before reading this article. Introduction "Most composers are looking for action-oriented, pulse-oriented…rhythm-oriented scores that propel the movie, and

Accompanying comments from the film's producers and Horner's team, including Joe Rand, Simon Rhodes, Jim Henrikson and of course Simon Franglen, are many shots of the orchestra recording and examples of both the Elmer Bernstein

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN: CUE-BY-CUE ANALYSIS

Introduction "Most composers are looking for action-oriented, pulse-oriented…rhythm-oriented scores that propel the movie, and the whole thing is about propulsion. And, as an afterthought, there's love, and there's emotion, and there's other things, but the main thing is pure adrenaline. And a lot of movies are made like that now. If you look at all of the Marvel comic movies or the tentpole movies that are made, how many of them are made with the same formula." – James Horner 1   James Horner said that in 2010. He was talking about the lack of originality in many of today’s film scores. The

We didn’t want them to disappear into the ether.” Of the recording

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN: EXCLUSIVE FIRST LISTEN

It was difficult to start listening to The Magnificent Seven, as it confronted us with a whirlwind of feelings: the excitement that goes with the discovery of a new James Horner score, the sadness of our realization that this would be one of the very last times, and the fear of disappointment after having mused for over a year about the quality of this score that is already the stuff of legend because of the circumstances in which it came to be. Because of the tragic accident of June 2015, it is the last soundtrack with themes composed by the

JAMES HORNER'S 62ND BIRTHDAY: ALL IS THERE

Photo credit: © Sylvia Wells   James Horner left this world, leaving us stunned and inconsolable. It was the day after Father's Day, the second day of summer. After this tragic and absurd June 22, we ran as our headline, "All is Lost,” a track title from the beautiful The New World. Since the departure of the composer, we must learn to live in this new world. A world without James Horner. So many notes will not be written.   In an interview about The New World (and for now only available in French), James Horner said: "Timelessness is not what we are but what we

TITANIC LIVE AT ROYAL ALBERT HALL: A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

Roughly a year ago, when Titanic Live was first announced, we knew this was an event not to be missed. This is the most popular soundtrack composed by James Horner, and to see it performed live in Royal Albert Hall seemed like it would be a very memorable experience. We were not disappointed. [divider]THE REHEARSAL[/divider] 27 April 2015. It is a little past noon when we enter the Royal Albert Hall, an imposing and majestic concert hall built almost 150 years ago, hosting over the course of decades many music legends: Richard Wagner, Arthur Rubinstein, The Beatles, Bob Dylan... The Royal Philharmonic Concert

AUTUMN NEWS

We remind you that the nearest major event is the world premieres of Pas de Deux, the double concerto for violin and cello, on 12 and 13 November in Liverpool.   [divider]Very little information for Aviation[/divider] Since the news of James Horner's involvement in the documentary Aviation: The Invisible Highway last July, we have received very few information. The great composer Peter Boyer, involved in the project as orchestrator, shared his enthusiasm on his facebook page: Then the composer and arranger Steve Sidwell, who has worked with Robbie Williams and George

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: WEAVING A WEB OF STARS

[divider]“James Horner on a super-hero movie!?”[/divider] Astonishment and questioning. Such were our both reactions nine months ago, while we were waiting for Black Gold, when the composer’s long-time editor Jim Henrikson announced the possible involvement of James Horner to the new theatrical adaptation of Spider-Man. Astonishment, first, as this is clearly not a universe into which the composer is used to venturing. If we pay close attention to his filmography and if we exclude The Mask Of Zorro, out of more than hundred films he did only one film based upon a comics character, i.e. an avenger who distinguish him/herself in
